On a completely random side note, I hope Pressfield isn't the only Alexander fiction you've read. Besides the horse training bit, I thought that book sucked. That was only published to go along with the movie.

I'm taking much, much artistic license. Especially with the narration style - of course this isn't how I think their first meeting really happened, though the narrator implies it is. So there will be other historical glitches, but hopefully they serve the story (or at least don't disturb it too much)...
Before Pressfield's book I read Renault's trilogy (and biography), Lord of Two Lands, and a couple of the more recent Alexander biographies, though not the ones focusing on specific military strategies etc., which I wouldn't be able to retain much of anyway. I agree Pressfield's book had its faults, but it had its good bits too, and unlike elsewhere Hephaestion was, at least to me, presented as Alexander's equal and complement.
