Drawing: Alexander with helmet

Sep 16, 2006 01:36

A drawing based on two images of Alexander which I found in a book by Pierre Briant. (A bust and a coin.)
In case pictures need ratings, these are suitable for all ages.

* The drawing went through express processing :) for
suesfan, because she's already stared at the computer screen so much beta'ing text from me, and I couldn't send her hot tea through the computer like Willy Wonka sends chocolate through TV's. After this I'll go back to being a turtle.

Original inspiration: I can't easily visualize "real" people by looking at busts, statues, and other carved images (probably because they have no irises or pupils...), so I thought it would be interesting to base a sketch on a bust, but try to soften the stoniness a bit.
Materials: Pencils, paper (80#). Photoshop's "Auto Contrast" function was also used.

So here are the two images I based it on:

Didn't really know what would come of it . . . but here's the drawing:

Alexander's close-up :) which somehow, to me, feels more sketchy:

Now, I'd like to make a request! If anyone out there has/knows of any carved images of Hephaestion (other than the one on the Alexander Sarcophagus and the one from Wood's In the Footsteps of Alexander, used as Hephaestion's bio image on livius.org) I'd really love a heads-up!

Then I could maybe attempt a sketch of him too...maybe? :)

As always, all comments are very much welcome and appreciated!
