So, oh Oracle of Livejournal, if I were to, you know, just speaking hypothetically, be thinking about theoretically getting myself a webpage, would you have any suggestions for nice, cheap, slash-friendly webpage-providers? And possibly a good couple of basic "How-To" resources? I'd love you foreeeeever!
I just have great nostalgia for all of the webpages that I used to frequent back when I was a lurker, and as much as I love LJ, you really can't beat a clean, simple, aesthetically-pleasing webpage as a fic-archive. I've also started to run into the dilemma of public/personal. I put my fic out deliberately to be public, I don't restrict readership, and I even go out of my way to publicize it. To my mind, this means that I have relinquished certain rights. The right to be publicly pissed when someone else doesn't like it and posts in a public forum, for example.
Fic also invites a certain critical evaluation and commentary that other types of posts don't. I have written fic-reviews, myself. I say, "Oh, well, they're opening themselves up to my thoughts by posting this deliberately for other people to read."
Nonetheless, this journal that I publicize fic from is the same place that I use to write silly nonsense, musings about my day, personal details of my life, complaints. I don't publicize that stuff. I don't force my entries in anyone's face. By the same token, I also don't invite critical commentary. Having both fic and journal posts in the same space seems to invite an overlapping of the two that I am beginning to find uncomfortable.
It's silly, I suppose. In the end, it's all unlocked on the Internet, and anyone that thinks they can completely control where things go and what the response to them will be once they're on the Internet is fooling themselves. However, I'm finding the idea of the polite fiction attractive. Society is made up of polite fictions, and in this, I am willing to play the fool.
