I don't disagree with this. However, the options usually come down to accepting that he will smoke, continuing to attempt to get him to stop until he does, or if it becomes too much of an issue, well, deal with it as you will.
I know he wants to quit.. he's told me before that he will eventually. I will have to be more patient and supportive, with just a little more nagging, and maybe i'll get my way :)
perhaps i'll try a few of your tactics and see what happens.. We haven't had a fight yet... can you believe that? 10 months and not a single fight... crazy..
i always figured it would be about cigarettes. I guess we'll see what happens when i bring it up.
thanks for you advice, and he clearly is too good to be smoking, but i don't think he knows it yet.
As a NOW non-smoker, I can definitely say that quitting smoking is really hard, and can often be a mental battle more that a physical nicotine addiction (at least for me it was).
I do not think it is selfish at all to want Donovan to quit smoking, because as you say, you care deeply about him and want him to be around for a long time :)
As Sarah mentioned, I think that letting him know your motivation behind what your asking him will help him understand where you are coming from, and that you are there for him as a source of strength and support when he does become ready to quit smoking.
I think being brutally honest about the way you feel is the only approach to take. Let him know you don't want to come across as a nag, and that you understand that it is his decision and he needs to do it in his time. However, you could mention that you are hoping it will be sooner rather than later :)
I brought it up with him this weekend and he was good about it, he actually said that he was surprised that i was so easy about it...
I know i have to be patient, and i know that he wants to quit, so as long as things are good i will nag only if i find he's turning to smoking more than he is now around me.
ultimately, he's still a great guy :) so.. woo! :)
