One day near PSU I saw a guy walking around with most of his nose missing. As in, you could see the cartilage in his nose. It was really awful, but he didn't seem particularly upset about it. A few days later I saw him and it was bandaged up.

I think you did the right thing. Once you determine that you can't really help the situation by being there, it's probably best to not be in the way.
