My family and I use "basement" and "cellar" interchangeably (South Jersey (as in NJ)). If we're talking about the one outside, with the big metal doors that you pull up, that's always "the outside basement." My stepdad - 75, Italian, grew up in NJ - often uses "down the" for either. E.g. "Where's the laundry basket?" "It's down the basement."
The word usage I recently attempted to track down was something I've heard rarely: "the [noun] needs washed." I managed to track down one page discussing it, and centering it around Ohio, but I can't confirm this. I want to build up a whole website of regional phraseology like this. It fascinates me.
