Instead of holding them in place with wax, the original way according to Janet Arnold, you stitch in behind the edge of the lace. If you have a straight edge of lace, you just stitch on the edge - if it's decorative, you have to hide it - that's boring and time consuming and frustrating, but the finished results are worth it - I think!
