17th Century Study Day

May 15, 2005 15:48

Well I had the good fortune to go to another study day yesterday, on 17th century clothing mostly, with a nice extra. It was in a town called Maidstone, about an hour's journey towards the English Channel from where I live. There was a bit of a major drama, as the girl who was coming with me missed the train, owing to her train from where she lived ( Read more... )

I love days like that - I learn more listening and looking than reading in books, and if I have pictures and notes, however bad, I remember stuff. Did I ever give you the title of that book on the Danish Kings' Wardrobe?

No you didn't. :-) It's wonderful to be able to look. A few years ago I had the fortune to look at and handle a collection of 18th century shoes which was a joy.

It's called "Kongedragterne fra 17. og 18. Aarhundrede" af Sigrid Flamand Christensen. (De Danske Kongers Kronologiske Samling paa Rosenborg) I tranlate this as "the Danish Kings' clothing? wardrobe? from Rosenborg in chronological order". It was published in 1940.

There was a wonderful 1800 muslin dress, a bonnet and a muslin cap, a child's coat, a gestation corset (!) a sheer mid century check muslin dress with small matching shawl shaped fichu cum pelerine. A red Thomson's crinoline caught my eye as I made a red crinoline for my first one at college.

Oohh...any way you could show some pictures of these?? :) Sounds like you had a splendiferous time!

I can only send these privately, as they are purely for research. They are not all very bright, as the cases are in semi darkness of course, and my new digital camera doesn't comopensate like my old Pentax did!!

Tell me what you are interested in Anna, and I will see what I cn do - e-mail me your address as I don't think I have it.

Thanks a million, Suzi! I'm interested in the 1800 muslin dress, bonnet, child's coat, gestation corset, sheer mid century check muslin dress and the red Thomson's crinoline. Send whichever of these you'd like. I'd love to see them all, but if you don't have time to send them all, a few of them is just fine. Whatever is easiest for you. You can send them to my gmail account: anna1861@gmail.com

Thanks again! You're a dear. :) (And I'll be sure not to put them on the web or anything like that. ;-) )

Hi Suzi,

The embroidered doublet/shirts/bodice sounds lovely! As does the stumpwork box. Its an ambition of mine to make one of those one day but of course, I can't use it in Kentwell! The years we do are too early for that! The gloves sound fantastic as well!

Lucky you to see all that! Wish I had the time.

Know how you feel to lose your dear one for a week or so - E is away on a course till Friday! Just me and the Feathered Duster!

And I haven't forgotten the silk!

I make time for something as relevant/important to my business, then I can put it off as a business expense (lol).

At least I have the large furry person to talk to - she's a great help, although I will lose her to my son for a while when I go away - he can only pick her up at weekends! and I go Wednesday one week, get home Thursday, have a gap while she stays away, go the next Thursday, then come back on a Thursday the third week. I'm only away two separate weeks, but she is away for three - I think I might miss her more than my dear one!!
