Fuck you, and Polanski, too.

I can and can't believe how kind the media is being towards Roman Polanski.  "Roman Polanski had sex with a then 13-year-old girl." "sexual activity."  "sex act."  It's like when rapists are successful, it forgives the crime.  He raped and sodomized a drugged little girl for Christ's sake.  These people are idiots.  They can't reconcile that most ( Read more... )

I avoid the news, so I hadn't heard about this until now. Now I have no idea what to say, as everytime I open my mouth to speak I feel like vomiting.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry you had to hear about this here on my bitter, bitter LJ :(

If you'd like to read more about it, here's my favourite article so far. It's a pretty good breakdown of the media's response to this incident: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2009/09/28/common-roman-polanski-defenses-refuted/

I think a big part of the problem is that there has been a very successful PR campaign to muddy the waters about just what happened. I know there was a pro-Polanski documentary that has managed to seep into the cultural unconscious, and, before I read up on the details of the case (insofar as they have been represented in the news), I totally thought that Polanski was in trouble not for drugging and raping a 13-year old girl, but for having sex with her. Now, to some there might not be a difference between the two, but to me the difference is huge. I think the notion that a 13 year old girl can't consent to have sex with someone over the age of 18 is absurd. If you don't really know what happened, it's easy to think of the Polanski case as a problem with uptight American sexual values rather than what it apparently is--a case about someone being raped. It would be just as bad as if she was 40 ( ... )

btw, I just realized that I accidentally wrote "persecute" instead of "prosecute" a few times. A rather infelicitous error, considering that the notion of "persecuting" Polanski implies that whatever we might do to him after he is extradited would be in excess of what is ethical. Not my position at all. Just wanted to clear that up.

Yeah, when I first heard about it from a source I trust, no words were used to make the listener/reader conceive that it may have been forced, or that he had been pumping her full of intoxicants. Upon reading that the girl protested and said "no" many times (once is enough) and that she had been fed champagne under the guise of it being for a photograph, I became enraged ( ... )
