I like Friday Fives that I actually think about a lot of the time anyway.
1. If you owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?
I would have a pub/bar not unlike the one from the TV show "Cheers." There would be a huge selection of microbrews from around the country. The room would be identical to the one in "Cheers" -- central bar in the middle with small tables surrounding it. The menu would consist of a few standards: hamburgers, chicken wings, etc. Not many standards... maybe three or four. But then I would have two or three menu items that would change daily, and they would be fantastic, simple, and incredibly delicious. It would be a place where you could bring a girlfriend on a rainy Friday night, or a place where you could come to just hang out after work for a good meal, a good beer, and a bartender who will remember you.
2. What is your favorite restaurant and why?
Depends where I live. In Columbia, Missouri, there was the
Flatbranch pub and microbrewery. In Germany, we would always go to the
Wooden Spoon on weekends for meals that were very German, and beers so big you damn near had to get inside of them to drink them. In Chicago is
Lou Mitchell's where girls get a free box of Milk Duds for just walking through the door, and everyone gets a free donut hole. In Panama City, there was a hole-in-the-wall bar called Pappy's that my dad, sister, and I used to walk to almost daily while we were in town (which was very, very often). The neighborhood's changed since then, but it used to be filled with smoke, had a jukebox that played "There's a Tear in my Beer", and they had raw oysters for CHEAP. I used to get a Reuben sandwich all of the time. I still remember the pickle that came with it. In Lafayette, IN, Best Friend Lisa took me to a pizza place that took your order and delivered your drinks via a model train. I love these places because of their food, because of their uniqueness, and because they had real personality.
3. What is your favorite fast food place?
For burgers, I'll have to say Sonic. They are really good, just a lot more expensive than they should be. For nonburgers, I'll say Subway. Simple, tasty, fresh-like, and a simple sandwich just doesn't get old.
4. If you had to choose only one type of food to eat for a year, what would it be?
Is beer a food? No? Hmm. This says "type" of food, not single food item. I'll say food grown from a grandmother's garden. Field peas, spinach, collards, corn, herbs, potatoes, pecans (though I hate pecans, I'd eat them if I had to). Everything that can be grown in the back yard, and nothing else.
5. What is your favorite cereal?
I like sticks-and-twigs cereals. Especially if they have a big mix of nuts and dried fruit. I like the earthiness, the subtle sweetness, and the surprise of the burst of flavor from a dried date or strawberry.
