So I just got bored and wrote an email to Philip J. Pullman, the author of the controversial "His Dark Matters" trilogy.
On the off chance you end up reading this email, I'll say up front that I'm a Christian, and that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the "His Dark Matters" trilogy.
Doubtlessly, you've discovered that your novels have sparked a great deal of controversy among Christian circles. I'm writing now to say that as a hobbyist writer, your style and descriptiveness are something that I admire and aspire towards. The imagination and energy you pour into your work makes it immensely entertaining and engaging to read, and your talent with words makes for an incredibly refreshing experience. I look forward to any future work you put out, because it is envigorating to read and enjoy. It's the style I try to emulate the most when I write.
Additionally, I would like to extend an apology to you on behalf of Christians everywhere who arrogantly took up arms against these masterful works that you have created. It is truly shameful on the name of Christ that they can't remember that it falls into the genre of the imaginary, and so can't see themselves as a mirror of the church you have portrayed so very vividly.
Jesus himself was opposed to such as them: the "Pharisees" and "Sadducees" of his time who were the haughty, arrogant, forceful, and hateful in their actions and beliefs. I would encourage you to have a closer look at the character of Jesus as he is portrayed in the Gospel of John, but I fear that encouragement would go unreceived.
In any case, I'll close this note by saying that at least in me, you have a fan among those who call themselves "Christian." Good day, and God bless!
