When my gut gives me contradictory signals, I use a number of devices to clarify things.

The first is to use reason. In purely objective terms, what are the consequences of the various possible actions I might take? After generating these consequences objectively, I reassess them subjectively. If something seems catastrophic, I re-evaluate: is it really catastrophic, or am I letting myself get caught up in being afraid of my own emotions?

The second is to use principles. There are two principles that I use (so far):

1. "Minimum violation": Take the action that best respects every individual's sovereignty. Do what results in the least infringement on the rights of yourself and others.

If that does not apply, then

2. "Balance of desires": The various actions under consideration bring you closer to sating some of your desires, and likely frustrate other of your desires. Take the action that brings you closer to sating your more-often-neglected desires; allow an often-sated desire to be frustrated.
