Much to my annoyance, I have also interacted with those teachers. Having never been a teacher in any sense but as an individual tutor, I've never had to instruct keyword-using students.

These things reliably crop up on on short answer/essay tests, but they also come into play on multiple choice exams as well. Testing is complicated business.
