This is such a familiar story, which is part of what made it quick reading. It also moves very quickly and is short. However, I enjoyed it, and the descriptions of 19th century England were enjoyable. I liked it much better than I did in middle school or high school, whenever we read it in school.

Hawkins was a philosopher who stepped down from teaching philosophy for a time to research best practices for teaching children science in the 1960s and 1970s. Interspersed with funny anecdotes, this book focuses on Lawson's struggles with mental illness. For me, her struggles with depression and anxiety sound far too familiar.
