our oatmeal jar is transparent so when I walked in the kitchen and saw a moth clinging to the side I was sort of grossed out because who wants moths in their oatmeal?  and then I realized it was on the outside not the inside and that was ok.

We recently started putting dry foods into leftover jars. More recently I've been washing out plastic soft-drink bottles (and removing the labels - looks like ethanol isn't strong enough for whatever label glue Coca-Cola uses here, I have to use paint thinner). Turns out black beans or lentils actually look pretty awesome in a clear plastic Coke bottle.

When we just had things in plastic bags, we had an infestation of red flour beetles, another one of weevils, and another one of moths. The beetles and weevils apparently chewed through the plastic bags - there were little beetle-sized holes all over the bags - and the moths were spawning in dried mushrooms and dried Thai chile peppers, things I didn't even know were nutritive.

Hopefully the bottles will turn out to be insect-proof, even if they aren't oxygen-proof.

Yeah, in the old house we had several infestations - that's why we started keeping everything in hard-sided containers. it works pretty well, and I like being able to see the food.

Hard-sided containers such as CSD bottles? I'm curious if you have data on whether they're beetleproof. They should be a lot more shatterproof and stackable than glass jars.

csd?

No, mostly we use these semi-hard plastic things from the dollar store. They're probably giving us cancer, but they're cheap and shatterproof and stackable, and they definitely keep bugs out. Screw-top lids with wide wide mouths are good too.

Call me a wimp but I tend to keep grains in the freezer, or at least the refrigerator.

Wimp. ;-)

We've got a 50 lb. bucket of wheat. It totally wouldn't fit in the freezer. ;-)

Glass jars with rubber seals are great!
