heading out to start the long run. first loop is 9 miles, through the farms and wineries to the south of here. We're hoping to find Jens's 15th century farm house and stop for water. -

Trip Report
Everything's going ok so far. I think I'm *mostly* over the jet lag, and I've started to get some work done.
Sunday I settled in and mostly didn't sleep. Monday I got up late, said hi to people, and got a little work done. Then out to Pub Quiz at Mr. Pickwick, which my team did ok at - fourth place, in a bar full of physicists and grad ( Read more... ) -
Arrived at CERN
I've arrived, safe and sound and only slightly rumpled, in my hostel room at CERN. The only hiccup was that the checkin desk was closed; I didn't know I was supposed to pick up my room key at the guard gate. So I had to hump my stuff from the gate to the hostel, and back to the gate, and back to the hostel. I probably overpacked again ( Read more... ) -
Science Bowl
So, this year I volunteered to be a timekeeper for the DOE-sponsored regional science bowl. Hundreds of kids, their parents and handlers descended on SLAC for a day filled with biology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, general science, math, pizza, heartache and triumph. It was pretty fun. And very impressive. -

So, the closest place to get decent British-style fish & chips near my house is also the best place in town for Cuban food.
