She's scared. Terrified, really. But she has to try. She's been released from the infirmary, but she's off-duty for at least a few days, so she's at home. She picks up the phone and dials.
"Hello?" Comes the familiar male voice on the other end.
"Hi. Um. Would you mind coming over for a few minutes? I need to talk to you." She waits tensely for his response.
"Yeah, of course. I'll be right over." He really is always there for her.
"Thanks." She hangs up and it's an anxious few minutes before he arrives. She hears the knock on her door and opens it slowly, inviting him in.
"What's up, Carter?" He asks. She knows he can see her fidgeting, and his voice betrays his worry.
I'm a safe bet.
The words ring in her ears as she steps towards him. In one smooth motion she places a hand on his cheek and leans forward to kiss him. He's stunned into stillness at first but responds in kind after a second. Her arms come up around his neck as she leans into the kiss.
When they break apart a minute later, they stare at each other carefully.
"Carter...what..." he starts.
"I...had to know."
"And do you?" he asks. For once, Sam can't read his face.
"I think I do." she says slowly. "But now we really need to talk."
