Consumer awareness bullshit

Okay, I need some input from all you guys. This post will be long, but read it if you ever have issues with the integrity of doctors and their prescriptions.I went to the eye doctor last Saturday to get an eye exam and a new contact lens prescription. I've been using the same Ciba Vision contact lens type since I was 16 and was ready to switch over ( Read more... )

How annoying.

*checks his own contacts*

Nah, mine are Bausch & Lomb made, Optima FW & Softlens 66. (One of mine is toric, so they're different brands.)

I actually hadn't worn contacts since college, and I just went to a Cohen's Fashion Optical in the mall and got set up a few months ago. The doctor was also somewhat evasive about giving me my prescription, and pointed out how great her prices were, etc., etc. I'm really not a people person, and any transaction I can complete without human interaction is generally one that I prefer, so I was like, "uh-huh, well, that's nice. I'm sure I'll come back and get them from you, but can I have it anyway, just in case? kthxbye."

And of course I ordered them from 1-800-Contacts that same day, and they were not only cheaper, but they also had a great deal on solution, so I think I did quite well, actually.

But, yeah, what an asshat doctor. I'd do exactly what you're leaning toward -- order online, and when it's time for your next checkup, get a new doctor.

The glasses I'm wearing now are the best glasses I've had in years as far as wearability; usually the lenses are so thick that they just feel like they're dragging my head down (even with the thinner lenses). But I will always prefer contacts just so I have peripheral vision.

You, however, always look stunning in glasses. If I looked as good in glasses, I might be inclined to wear them. Not going to happen, though, since the strength of my prescription makes my eyes look like BBs.

Good advice. That's what I did.

It's really too bad, since I was quite happy having my triumvirate of docs decided on: At various times I've been missing either the regular dentist, the regular doctor, or the eye doctor. Actually, I've pretty much always had them--I just didn't always like them. I felt pretty settled in, but this ... unsettled me. What an ass!

Truly annoying. And you're right about it (the online service) being a business. I don't want to be knee-jerk; however, the doc creeped me out before I read the info online. If he had been like, "Oh, our prices are good--go look around and then hopefully you'll buy from us," I would've probably done so. But the accusatory tone was very disturbing. And it just went hand-in-hand with what I later read online.

I don't think I knew you wore contacts. My vision's atrocious. I've had glasses since fourth grade. I blame all the reading--darn you, literacy!
