I'm so sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with you, your dad, Gail and her family. I remember them all from Hawaii. She has fought a good fight but now it's time to rest.
Sorry to hear about it. I think the phonecall is nice, be sure to talk about yourself, get her mind off it, or something she likes to hear about, if that is the sort of thing she can use. I think my grandfather enjoyed hearing me prattle on about college as he was briefly in and out after the chemo stopped working.
I'm in the same boat with my father-in-law now, some things you can only hold back so long. It's good to take time to talk to them when you can.
This is such sad news. I can tell from your writing that she is a very special person. I think that whatever happens, you will always have that special memory to treasure along with all the lovely times you have spent together from day one. Never fear, special memories will stick because they are important to you.
If it is feasible, I think you should go sooner rather than later. If you are unsure if you will have regrets, I think you should make the effort now so you won't have any. Whether you speak on the phone or see her, leave your expectations behind and instead be open and flexible.
