well japanese food is really becoming so much more accessable, so it makes sense. I think bento boxes have been around for long long time in Asia, but as we get the culture here, we'll see stuff more.
In my opinion, it's a big presentation with not as big quantity...I always want to get two just for myself, thought one is probably more right :D
that second link I sent was more the concept part :D
I googled bento box and found that there are some on Oprah's list of "good things" or whatever....
so they're definately trendy now. heh heh.
I always get chirashi when getting japanese food - and it often comes in a funky box, but still gives a good variety of sashimi and rice with out the annoying useless garnishes!
It's just a Japanese boxed lunch. There are some certain foods that are traditional in them and some people spend tons of time on making characters/artistic food in them, but you don't have to. They're good for portion control and are fun.
I carry a bento every day to work, have for a while. :)
If you want a plain plastic bento box (ours are black plastic with high-gloss red "lacquer" accents) I can pick one up for you the next time I hit our local Asian market. I sewed carrying pouches and chopstick holders for them out of some brocade I bought for a song in LA. Vogon's coworkers think they're cute, but they haven't seen the hardcore cute -- Laurel was a Hello Kitty bento kit one of my friends bought in Japan.
The ones we have were maybe $6 apiece. I'd be happy to send you one.
About ten years ago I bought a Tupperware-style container that had the separated sections and was microwave-safe. If I stumble across them in a store again I plan to buy several! My original one has been requisitioned by my sister to pack snacks in her diaper bag. (I am cool with that -- last summer my little sister and I staged a bag intervention to separate her diaper bag stuff from her laptop bag/briefcase. You know it's bad if I'm involved in shopping for bags, heh.)

They always just seem like a Japanese TV dinner concept.
Nice little partitions...tiny bit of soup/appetizer, tiny bit of salad, compartment of entree and sauce.
mmmmm.
it's a combo, yanno?
:)
