after a series of typically hellish series of flights from Toronto through Ottawa to Iqaluit (why oh WHY is Air Canada so cavalier with its "rules" and standard practices???) we arrived, had a quick lunch and booted it over to the High School. THe ten students we worked with were immediately engaged, did exemplary work with the Lomograms and we ( Read more... )

There is an article on the internet today about the remains of what they are calling "stone age lovers" who are seemingly embracing. The picture of the hugging skeletons is beautiful in a dark way and the scientists have decided to keep the "lover" together as they dig them up, investigate their remains and then stick them in a museum. One of the people involved made a flippant comment about how they were too interesting to be left to rest in peace. That’s very considerate of him especially considering the fact that they very well might have been buried alive.

What is it about bones that we are so fascinated with?

On my parents property we find antlers and bones left over from the coyotes’ dinners all the time and it is always very exciting. I always want to know the story behind the bones, the event that occurred, and like you I want to bring them inside.

We keep telling stories even after we are dead.

Your visit to Iqaluit sparked a memory I completely forgot about! Now that I think about it, it is kind of funny... When I was in the third grade we had penpals from a school in the Northwest Territories (before Nunavut existed). I remember sending letters to them. My penpal was a girl. I think she was slightly older than me. I remember her telling me about the Pizza Hut and McDonald's they had there and me being amazed. I also remember the teachers including things in the package for the entire class. For our class they sent Caribou Jerky!! For their class we sent Canadian Flag pins? I never thought about it before but isn't that weird. They are a part of Canada too haha?! Usually you send flags to people in other countries.
