I've read 35 all the way through. I also think (and as a PhD candidate [almost] in literature, I'm highly qualified to give this opinion) that this list is crap
( ... )
Yeah - as I was adding that bit about how there weren't many Japanese authors on the list, I was struck by how many were white. And you already noted that there are books on this list that I would not consider great literature.
And if we would like to talk about double-standard.... if we limit this list to only originally English works (which I would assume is why there aren't many non-anglocentric authors) then what is the Bible doing on there?
Yeah. This list was contrived. It almost reflects more the state of literary knowledge of the populace than the fact that most people haven't read more than 6 books on the list!
By the way, in case it wasn't evident, my first remark about being qualified was supposed to be sarcastic. It ended up sounding a little stuck-up. Sarcasm doesn't always translate well to the screen :/
