I think that the point that John was making is that when violence and sex are portrayed in such a way that reflect their sublime profundity, that both can be used as a tool to reach a deeper truth.
Instead of desensitizing us, I feel that at its best art that utilizes sex and violence can actual awake in us a deeper understanding of them and of ourselves.
I am not saying that gratuitous portrayals of sex and violence are not desensitizing (albeit awesome) in some situations. But only so in gratuity. When used artistically, they can often have the opposite effect of awakening a more profound understanding ourselves and our world.
