It's the end of the world as we know it...

So, the new job is going well. What I’m enjoying most is the exposure to news. It’s a fairly narrow field that I am reading lots about - banking, pensions and buy-to-let predominantly - but it’s interesting stuff. Let’s be honest, I’m a massive nerd, I love learning ( Read more... )

It's an interesting subject though, because at the moment there's a lot of stuff computers can't. There's a car company that offers massive customisation of their cars if you pay enough, and apparently recently they had to replace the robots making those parts with humans, because the robots couldn't manage the fine work to a satisfactory level. There was also a recent case where video game players - without realising it - helped solve a problem with quantum computing, that the computers themselves couldn't even BEGIN to solve. So it seems like humans are still way better at fine details and problem solving than computers can manage. Which isn't to say they won't catch up and take our jobs eventually, but it's interesting to think that maybe we're projecting a little bit, and that maybe there's some stuff computers will never really be as good at as humans.

I sincerely hope there isn't a crash soon, because I'm probably going to be looking for work shortly. Fingers crossed.
