Wow, I love your description of The Mussel. How is Selkie like mythical selkies? ('Cause I have a thing for selkies.) Your story sounds incredibly fun. I love new twists on superheroes.
I've gone a little off-myth and she's just a shapeshifter whose alternate form is a seal. I haven't decided whether to give her a coat to use or not. She can shift part-way between the two (yay opposable thumbs). I'm debating really mashing up my myths and giving her a hypnotic song.
Selkie is an average-ish sized woman (maybe a bit on the short side) and doesn't change much in overall mass when she shifts so you can tell which seal she is because she's the small one. She can hold her breath for a long time but can't breathe underwater, whereas The Mussel can.
