As I have mentioned in class, I am not a strong proponent of tradition as a design element in a system's function. I do, however, understand why it is so common. The continuation of any existing system, even in reform, will be most compatable when arbritrary factors are consistent with what people are familiar ( Read more... )

Please don't forget one of the factors contributing to the teacher's turnover rate and one of the biggest reason I gave up on my goal of being a teacher for pre-college kids (at least in public schools) and corroborated by friends who still do teach - covering a range from 1st grade in Detroit to High school English in Milwaukee; "reforms" "mandates" "standards" proscribed by distant politicians, clamoring to appease the ignorant masses, pacify think-tanks, and remedy unfavorably findings from blanket studies. Sadly the politicians are totally ignorant about what works and what doesn't, they ignore practicality, feasibility, and ignore reports of negative unintended consequences. Teachers are forced to "teach to the test" and so much is lost in the process ( ... )
