I wouldn't worry too much about this. Taxing virtual items is not going to be happening anytime soon. I really don't think the IRS wants to deal with the headache of providing virtual services in MMORPGs to everyone - plus, they'd have to play ball with the rest of the world's governments as well.

It's just an amusing thought that had occured to some bean-counter somewhere that some idiot pencil pusher decided to take at least half-way seriously. :)

Agreed, the government moves slower than a snail trying to sprint through molasses, so it would be quite some time before this became a reality.

I actually got into some good conversations about this after I posted it IRL and heard many of the same things. How would they deal with the rest of the world, etc. Fact is, IF this came about, they wouldn't have to. It's easy enough for the government to figure out who lives in the states versus who doesn't.

But, from what I understand anyway, this is targeted more towards the players of Second Life where their items are actually able to be sold to other players, so I have to concede that this won't become too much of a reality.
