Sometimes I wonder whether we're living out repressed fascistic desires for a pure master race through our pets.

Bernard is no pedigree, to be sure, but sometimes people will ask, "What sort of cat is he? He looks like a domestic shorthair."

At that point, something inside clicks, and I reply, almost defensively, "Well...he is part Siamese, I'm

Oh, it's no secret. I wear my scratch marks as a badge of honor.

Mine is a beast. Anyone who has seen him is now dead, or permanently mute from psychological scars. If he's part Siamese, it's the Siamese velociraptor sort.

Therefore I count myself lucky that I never have to get involved with any of this messy inner tyrant bit of which you speak.

My cat is part rabbit. Specifically, one of those terrifyingly overbred rabbits that consist of four cubic feet of rabbit fur with a tiny little rabbit body supposedly hidden somewhere inside. You can also tell she's a rabbit because she hops like one and she loves to eat plants.

Our other cat is 100% pure cat, as purely and indisputably cat as any cat I've ever known. But that's much less interesting to talk about than the rabbit.

It's interesting that you should say that. Bernard exhibits rabbit-like traits sometimes. He won't eat veggies, although he likes some grasses, and one time ate a french fry I dropped.

The moment I walk in the house with any potted plant in my hand, or even a leaf or a cut flower, Stardust comes running and meows to demand that I let her eat it. If I don't hand it over, she stands on her hind legs and leans one front paw against me while reaching up with her other front paw to try to get at the plant.
