I'm a little surprised at the outrage Westboro Baptist Church incites. Don't get me wrong, they're horrible, terrible people for promoting hate and small-mindedness. I dont think its their message thats really any more offensive than any other fringe/hate/weirdo group, its that they physically appear at emotionally charged locations and force their message.

At least groups like the KKK keep to themselves. Westboro showing up at funerals is pretty offensive. Their message is easy to dismiss. Their presence isnt.

I honestly think Westboro Baptist Church is doing us an unintentional favor. They're so determined to offend absolutely everyone in American society that it's virtually impossible for anyone, no matter how right-wing, to avoid hating them. And very few things forge bonds between people so quickly as having a common enemy. The Westboro Baptist Church is the perfect common enemy to get everyone on the side of gay people.

That's been my line of thought as well. Also, it allows us to put the old Reductio ad Hitlerum to rest, and to instead tell people, "You know who you sound like right now? Westboro."

I can see how their presence would certainly be a nuisance. I can certainly appreciate that.
