I think there was a time, in the long-gone days of yore, when Muse sounded like they were aping (or at least heavily influenced by) The Bends-era Radiohead, but now it's a pretty silly comparison.
I'll agree with you there, around the time of Showbiz they were very heavily trying to sound like The Bends-era Radiohead- only nowhere near as good.
Also, people often bring up that Matt Bellamy sings like Thom Yorke. I hear way more Jeff Buckley or Freddie Mercury than I ever do Thom. Anyways, it was a good show, despite the predominantly high school crowd. I think all the hipster 20-somethings were at Gnarls Barkley (who I'm finally starting to tire of) that same night.
I definitely can hear the Freddie Mercury. His voice is very theatrical and melodramatic and, as you said, overwrought. But he sells it really well.
I can honestly say I just don't get Gnarls Barkley and I have felt so uncool as a result. Now, though, I see a backlash on the horizon and thus I can be cool again. Phew!

Agreed that BHaR is their best work yet though.
