My mother, whom I believed could never stop smoking, finally has, while many of my friends, whom I swore never would start, have.

What a completely bizarre turn of fate this has been.

Also that sentence is way too complex. Natsuki should edit it for me.

maybe you could use a semicolon. :)

but that is a strange turn of fate. maybe your friends will quit when their kids are 20?

I often wonder how college students can fund a habit like that--those little motherfuckers are expensive! Still, despite growing social hostility towards smokers and every conceivable warning being available that it's probably not a great idea, a good many of my friends manage to maintain fully fledged habits. I suppose it's their call.

And no, not everything you learn in senior year English is gospel.

my dad and i have had one conversation about smoking. he asked me if any of my friends smoked and i hesitantly named one guy he only vaguely knew. he nodded gravely, and while i was bracing myself for the lecture because I was sure he must of smelled it on one of my jackets or something, he asked me the same thing you're saying - those fuckers are expensive. and when he was in college, he only paid 25 cents per pack, and how he could totally afford several in a week.
