3rd and 4th Quartly Updates

You know, if it weren't for this thing I would never know what everyone is up to. Fortunately the holiday's are coming and hopefully be able to stop being a recluse for a bit. Anyway, I've come to the decision that my life is boring enough that I figure I'll just store up all of the miscellaneous crap that's happened to me and update once or ( Read more... )

Next time you're in the NYC Metro area, let me know! Barring schedule conflicts, I would gladly meet up with friends.

Good luck with grad school!

I'll be heading up that way around mid/late July next year. Let me know if you'll be around and I'll stop by on my way to upstate NY.

I should be around New Jersey over the summer -- I have to do an internship in the area because of other committments -- although I hope to make it back to Texas for a vacation at some point. :-) Keep in touch!

What kind of degree are you looking to get (both level and field)?

I'm looking to get an MS in Comp Sci. I'll have to play a bit of catch up, but I love a challenge.

There's a good chance you've noticed what I'm about to mention if you've gone so far as to send in applications (in which case, apologies and feel free to ignore), but in case you haven't, here goes:

Rice also offers what it calls "non-thesis" (or "professional") masters in certain areas. Basically, the classroom requirements are the same as a standard MS, but no thesis is required. Depending on whether you're interesting in research or just expanded knowledge, one or the other could be a clearly better choice. Or if you plan to enter academia vs continuing to work in the 'real world'.

The CS one is called Master of Computer Science (MCS). http://compsci.rice.edu/academics.cfm?doc_id=4432

I have the EE equivalent (Master of Electrical Engineering or MEE). With the caveat that I've only worked for one company since obtaining the degree, I've generally found that employers will treat it with the same esteem as an MS.

I did notice this type of degree, both A&M and UT have similar programs, though I can't remember about UH at the moment.

Although I'm sure the "professional" degree won't hurt me most of the universities seemed to portray it as a "lesser" degree. Because of this I figured I would just apply for the standard MS degree and then change my degree plan once I'm in if I decide I don't want to write a masters. The theory being it easier to go from thesis->non-thesis than it would be the other way around.

It sounds convoluted to me and I wouldn't be surprised if it came back to bite me in the ass later on.
