Calatéa on her first birthday (about 12-14 hours old).......pretty as her mother...and that's sayin' something.

She is a dream. Born 5 lbs., 12 ozs., 19", and cute as cute can be :D Generally happy, not very fussy, never cries, and she has my hands ;)

This monitor.

We actually decided to go with disposable diapers. A lot of thought and deciding went into that but, in the end, we decided to go that route.

As for breast feeding, it is rough but I think we are finally getting over that hump. We ended up being consulted by this stupid lady at the hospital who was convinced it shouldn't ever hurt at all so every time Calatéa latched on and it hurt for a second, she made us start over. The end result was not very happy and required recovery. But, as I said, I think we are over the terrible part and doing ok now.

Did you have a lot of troubles? I confess to not having read my journal a lot over the past months :)

What is the medication for and is it something you could theoretically just refuse?

I suppose I'm not surprised about a bit of medical ineptitude in such a "meat 'n' potatoes" kind of place. We are pretty lucky to be in a location that is pretty progressive and let us call almost all the shots.

We even found a pediatric practice that believes in a blending of eastern medicine, western medicine, homeopathy, and herbalism. Basically a group that doesn't believe in throwing away a wooden wheel just because they invented rubber tires.

How is Stephen handling the formula? I My Gnome's brother and his girl didn't end up breast feeding and their little one seems to be doing pretty well. Much more burp-ee because of bottle feeding but, all in all, he is strong and happy.....which is what really matters in the end.

Thank you so much, Lee. It still feels unreal sometimes when I look over and see my daughter in a bassinet. I need my eyes to be able to take pictures so I can remeber the look she gives when being held and rocked.

Yes...no camera can recreate it precisely enough. Your mind already holds that picture tightly...and a wondrous lifetime of moments hereafter.

You are going to make the best Daddy ever...what a fortunate girl...with a fortunate mom and dad to hold her close in love.

Babies rule....well, not all babies but certainly this one ;) When are you due again? It's not too far away, is it?

If you can stand it, we highly recommend going natural and in a dimly lit room. Calatéa was opening her eyes within minutes of being born because of the low light level and (we think) lack of foggy drugginess.

...but again, some women do this, some women do that, in the end, none of it ends up mattering as much as just getting through it and holding your baby :)

i'm due around june 15th. it seems like it's far enough! i'm totally ready for this bun's oven to have it's timer go off.

i'll agree with the dimly lit room, but i don't know about all natural.... my mom has had 4 kids, some natural, and some not, and she was very serious when she told me it's ok to take the drugs.

The hospital nurses estimated only about 2% refuse the drugs and there are plenty of healthy babies around so there really can't be anything wrong with it, in all honesty ( ... )
