Uh, so, we might be moving to Berkeley instead?

Adam and I had to meet with the Bishop, since he has to approve Adam's seminary plans and stuff. And so Adam tells him that he applied to General Theological in NYC and Virginia Theological Seminary outside of DC, he's like, "Well, that's cool with me, but have you considered Bexley Hall?"

And at that ( Read more... )

Yes, if you come to Berkeley it would be awesome! We could hang out and cook interesting things and sit around in coffee shops and have a smashing good time. The only issue is the cost of living is crappy, but I think the job prospects for someone with your qualifications/experience are pretty good, given all the coffee places, bookstores, and so forth. I honestly have no clue about publishing itself (although it's got to be better than Ohio) but I know there's a big literary scene so you could definitely get yourself published somehow.

Also, the GTU is really cool - the ling department at UCBerkeley actually has a good relationship with them. Last year's fieldwork class, for example, translated one of the Gospels into some really interesting foreign language (I can't remember which, but they were documenting it for their class) for one of the students there.

The MA options look pretty cool. You seem like a Ethics and Social Theory/Religion and Society kind of person: "It includes a focus on theological and social ethics, with attention to ethical theory and history, analysis, and policy as related to politics, health care, feminist ethics, sexual ethics, professional ethics, or environmental ethics." Or basically, "the Bible says love each other, SO BE NICE ALREADY YOU SONS OF BITCHES"

So anyway, what kind of time frame are you looking at here? When would you be moving/when would Adam be starting seminary? aka, when do you get the heck outta Ohio?

Not until late August/early September, and we won't actually know where we're going until July, probably. It's all so up in the air- the Episcopal Church is really laid-back and casual- and that bothers me, because I don't want something to go wrong and end up living here for another year...

I think Berkeley would be awesome, or New York.... I really didn't enjoy living in DC, but you might appreciate it more than I. Regardless, good on you both for staying motivated and determined. By all means, get out of Ohio! Likewise, I have no plans to go back to Michigan permanently; much as I love my hometown, it's not a mind-expanding place for young people IMO.

I have the exact same feelings about Tucson. It's not a bad place, per se, but there is just nothing going in in Arizona that feels worthwhile at all. There's a reason why I went to one coast and now the other (at least CA is much, much closer to AZ than NY is -- my parents are happy about that).

Yeah, that's much the same way I feel about Ohio. Plus, if we end up having a kid at some point in the distant future, I refuse to raise them in this area. I still remember the horror I felt at ten years old when I realized that my classmates were using "Jewish" as an adjective for "lame"- as in, "that's so Jewish."

Yeah, I don't do well in a racist, sexist, backwards environment. This year has certainly been...interesting.
