I love the sound of this, a lot.

For obsidian weapons maybe something like M&M health brackets would work: chipped, nicked, and so on, with increasing chances of breakage.

My only worry would be items that need their own character sheets and it'd get too-too fiddly.

It could just very well be a special power that lots of monsters will have is weapons breakage.

I dunno.

Maybe a simple one- or two-step modifier.

I admit it: I just like the idea of using chipped and nicked obsidian weapons in moments of crisis.

I totally dig that idea. I love the idea of hitting something too hard and leaving part of your magic sword right in the critter.

Just thinkin' judd_sonofbert April 7 2009, 19:28:14 UTC
Thanks.

To be honest, at this point, I am far more interested in thinking about it than playing it. I jotted this down so that if it does come out as the next setting, I can compare what they did with what I would've done.

Deck Chairs of Athas judd_sonofbert April 7 2009, 21:23:34 UTC
Man, that second boxed set was butt, as far as I am concerned. Eff the blue age.

"The Sorcerer-Kings are just re-arranging the deck chairs."

Neat!

Skill challenges for lightweight travel between cities. Treating travel to more remote or dangerous locations as Traps/Hazards? Teh win. ("Oh! You strayed too close to the Screaming Desert, take 2d6 Thunder damage..." / "I figured out how to disable the Travel To Far-Sands hazard! Come follow me on my shortcut...")

This all said, this is me, over here, mulling Mu 4E.

Geographic Traps/Hazards judd_sonofbert April 7 2009, 21:24:09 UTC
Having geographic traps/hazards is white-hot, man.

Dark Sun seems tailor-made for 4e's design goals. Observer your simple mapping of 4e concepts to Dark Sun concepts.

You smarty pants game designer types need to make a pitch to WOTC.
