Cleaning My Room Fridayish

Jul 10, 2009 00:57

Reading: I am flirting with a few books but nothing is grabbing me yet. The Shadow at the Bottom of the World is next to my bed and several science fiction novels (Red Mars and The Reality Dysfunction) but I don't feel committed to either just yet.

Planning: This weekend, UFC 100!

Wearing: Still wearing a blue t-shirt and my black Dickies.

The Reality Dysfunction series goes heavily, heavily off the rails in the later books. I don't really recommend it.

That is really cool to know. Thanks.

I agree with Amnesiack, the series that starts with The Reality Disfunction goes off the rails and leads to less interesting places.

On the other hand, I very much recommend Pandora's Star by Hamilton. Excellent SF.

I do like these posts.

Reading: A Midsummer Night's Dream, in preparation for a readthrough this weekend. I'm playing Theseus, who I am gradually growing to like.

Planning: Layout for my book.

Wearing: My Union Jack T-shirt and beige shorts.

Writing: My Cthulhu adventure, The Watchers In The Sky.

Thanks, I like them too.

I wish I could find a blog tradition that was as compelling for Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Watchers in the Sky coming alone well?

Yes, Monday seems to need something. I'm not sure what.

Watchers In The Sky is looking very good, although I've been doing it too much, so it's becoming something of a chore. It'll be fine.

Are you still studying? I haven't read much about your studies for a while.

Summer's off from school and just two more semesters left after this.

R: The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins. Still plowing through Fictions, Jorge Luis Borges, I'm into the second book, the one all about different books. Gormenghast on audio CD continues to amaze me; nearly every sentence can stand on its own as a little piece of poetry.

P: Working a bit, birthday party for a kid friend of ours with cool parents, hammering away at a short story.

W: Brown jeans, green t-shirt.

W: Still this fantastic war, no-heroes thing. I have to research a bit on hoplite warfare. Having gamed only two or three times in the last two-and-a-half years, my desires are manifesting in PC creation. Lately I made up some 1st-level D&D 4E PCs against the grain, a Dwarven War Wizard and an Eladrin Infernal Pact Warlock. Then I grabbed Burning Wheel and worked on that. BW's great for awesome PCs.

Amnesiack, thanks for the heads up on The Reality Dysfunction. I read the first one or two, and really enjoyed them, but haven't yet picked up the rest.

Reading: Re-reading Knowing How to Know while on the train to/from work.

Planning: House cleaning + exercise.

Wearing: Lone Wolf & Cub T-shirt + Warmups

Writing: Runa setting goodness using HQ2. "Idyllic village in jungle about to be torn apart by the Hero Wars" Hee. Think Amishi from Princess Mononoke + Village from Ong Bak.

Reading: Almost done with The Day of Forever, a collection of short stories by J.G. Ballard. Hard to classify them, but they all have surreal elements. A lot of them involve isolation - people on deserted planets, an empty world where time has stopped, stuff like that. Good late-night reading material when things are quiet.

Planning: Busy weekend - running a game for the wife for the first (and probably only) time, possible trip to the beach, and Sunday evening I get to draw burlesque performers at Doctor Sketchy's Portland!

Wearing: New Columbia Sportswear button-down and some microfiber travel pants

Writing Drawing: Started on a still life with a glove, a hammer, and a tape measure last night. Not the most interesting subject but practice is practice. I envy people who can take the train to work - unlimited life drawing subjects on tap. Going to do some little sketches all weekend - at geohashing, the coast, and then Dr Sketchies.
