There was this excellent novel I read as a young teenager where this three college friends acquire an old military submarine - one of the three is fabulously wealthy and they were going to just buy a yatcht and sail to Europe for the summer.
Anyway, one of them has been having these strange dreams calling him to the sea (which is why he suggested a sailing trip in the first place), and when they depart something happens and he guides them to this underwater city where his relatives live as mermen and mermaids, of sorts.
All sorts of craziness ensues and I recall it as a fun adventure reminiscent of a sort of Kane of Old Mars meets Underwater Atlantis.
I wish I could find it again. I can't recall any of the important details besides what I just wrote. =P
Not to state the obvious, but that submarine synopsis reminds me a lot of the short Lovecraft stories I've been reading. Some of his work is just about under water civilizations. There are tons of authors that have run with those types of ideas. Naturally the titles of these works escape me.
