Jude looked up from where he was lying on his bed, negligently flipping through the pages of an art book, when Max burst into their room. He raised an eyebrow in mute question; Max had hardly ever looked so excited, almost as though he wanted to jump up and down and wave his hands in the air.
"What's got you looking as if you're the cat who swallowed the canary and wants to tell someone about it, love?" he inquired, stretching a little and leaning back on both elbows as he waited for his lover to spill his news.
Max shook his head, grinning from ear to ear. "Oh, nothing special. Except that I think I might have found us a place to live so that we can get out of this hotel and have a permanent residence in New York."
Jude sat bolt upright, his eyes widening. "Really? Where is it? How much? I'll have to get a job .... do something to help you with the rent ...." He couldn't help biting his lip, thinking of all that he'd have to do in such a short time. And getting a job wouldn't be easy, considering that he was in the country illegally. He didn't even know if he could.
Max shook his blond head again, hair flying around his face. "No, you won't. You know what I've said ever since we met -- I don't need anything from you but your companionship and your love," he said, sitting down on the bed beside Jude. "It means more than anything else you could give me."
"But that doesn't pay the bills," Jude insisted, looking up at his boyfriend with worried eyes.
"You are not to worry about anything like that," Max said, leaning over Jude and pushing him down on the bed, then kissing him firmly. His boyfriend's arms went around his neck, pulling him down closer for another kiss before the two of them broke apart slightly.
It was a few moments before Max spoke again. "Jude .... you're a gift. A beautiful, precious gift that came into my life when I least expected it and when I most needed it. Baby, you give me enough -- more than I can say -- by just being you and loving me. I don't need anything else."
Jude's eyes filled with tears at Max's words, and this time, he was the one to shake his head. "No, you're the gift," he whispered, one hand raising to trace the line of Max's jaw. "You gave me the kind of love I never thought I'd have."
Max buried his face against Jude's soft dark hair, blinking back his own tears. When he spoke again, his voice was soft and husky.
"So, what do you say we go out and look at this place? Finding somewhere permanent for us to live can be my next gift to you. And yours to me will be moving in there with me and being by my side."
Jude nodded, his eyes still tear-bright. "That sounds like something I could live with."
The smiled at each other, leaning together for a last lingering kiss that needed no words to convey what they felt.
Max got up off the bed, holding out his hand to Jude. The other boy rose, taking his lover's hand and heading for the door. Max followed him out, closing and locking the door behind them, holding Jude's words to his heart and hoping fervently that this possible new apartment was going to be a place where they could start building their life together.
