Two initial reactions come to mind, for what they're worth:

1) Forget the media. They're doing what they always do -- selling themselves by seeding conflict and divisive thinking by focusing on the extremists, the people who are the loudmouthed blowhard minority. The Republicans are not the enemy, nor are the Christians, or even the right wing, necessarily. The mass media sensationalists who are trying to get your goat and cultivate hatred for their own gain -- they are the enemy.

2) Forget Obama. Success or failure for a President in any unilateral way is indeterminable. He's in office. He's hopefully a good guy. He'll do a job. Whatever. The benefit he has brought to our nation has already come. It's the head start we have toward the idea of unity and outreach. Grab it now and run with it. If we wait for the President to capitalize on it, we'll likely lose it. It's our ball.
