Not too sure, but it might be recoverable if it were placed in a surrogate machine and booted with any of the more modern Linux recovery live CDs. The idea being that, once it's off the native drive chain and in something else, you might still be able to recover most, if not all, of the information off the drive. The only sticking point would be that you would have to find a special adapter to plug the laptop drive onto an IDE chain.
Not saying it's perfect, but it's a possible solution to get that stuff off the ailing drive.
