Well, Luke does eventually get married. Leia & Han have 3 children, one of which turns into a Sith lord and his twin sister must kill him, so not all is happy and golden for her. Plus, at least Luke was with his real family and had a normal childhood (as normal as you can be in Tatooine), while Leia was adopted by strangers and forced to grow up in the middle of the Rebellion and take on a political role from an early age.
Actually, both of Leia's sons are dead. I am so pissed about that on her behalf that I stopped reading the EU. :/ Also, I loved Jacen in the earlier books and they destroyed his character later...
Yes in books XD But I'm talking about just the movies here. During those, I think it was like 12 years all together? (two between the first two and then ten years passed before return of the jedi?) and all the time before that when Luke was a kid... totally screwed XD Yeah she may have been with strangers but she had a much shwankier upbringing XD!!!
GODDAMNIT THIS IS WHAT I THINK EVERYTIME I WATCH A NEW HOPE.
Although I dunno about rooting for the Dark Side, unless being on the Dark Side with a brain (and not being stupid and killing your wife by kinda accident like Ani) is possible.
But Leia has to be a love slave for Jabba. None of the dudes ever have to be love slaves!
Also there's that creepy cut-away right before Darth Vader interrogates her with the weird robot thing when she's captured. A lot of Leia's "suffering" is off-screen and implied to be somehow sexual or about domination, because she's the one female character. Whereas Luke's suffering is onscreen and manly, because he's a dude (although he starts out as a wussy dude, the progression is him going from wuss to bad-ass).
ANYWAY, yeah Luke suffers more, but he's also the protagonist. There's a reason why the story isn't about Leia. Also, stories are always about dudes and not ladies, because dudes are WAY more interesting and important and have penises and stuff. Leia's just supposed to look pretty and live in a castle or something off-screen, maybe get tortured or something by the bad guys (but don't think too hard about it) and at least she gets rescued later by some dudes. It's the Princess Peach formula.
