I think it's good to reach out to people, but please don't retrospectively think that *you* could have done something. Unfortunately, by the time many people are in a state where suicide becomes a serious option they are in such a bad place that hardcore psychiatric help is the only thing that can truly provide a strong guarantee of safety. Unfortunately, too few people actually seek such help themselves and too many friends/family assume dark suicide talk is "just depression talking." If anyone ever talks suicide, they need to get help right away.
