♛ CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Tiamat "Tia" Arlyn
Series: OC
Ability:
Tia's main ability is Water Manipulation or Hydrokinesis. Her ability requires a medium to start with: it can be anything from a bottle of water, a water fountain, puddles left over from a storm, or heavy humidity in the air - as long as it contains water, Tia can manipulate it to however she wants to.

Unsurprisingly, she's a strong swimmer Michael Phelps meet your worst nightmare and can predict heavy rains or storms fairly accurately. She also knows variations of Krav Maga, the Buddhist Style, and Savate as a result from traditional family training.

Position: Swim Team Coach.

Appearance: About five feet tall and built on the petite side, Tia certainly doesn't seem very intimidating at first glance, but her rather caustic and blunt demeanor totally blows that out of the water. She has predominantly dark blue hair with red highlights and wears it straight and long, reaching to her waist. Though not often concerned with attracting attention and looking flashy, she does make an effort to be presentable and has a rather feminine style; this doesn't mean she's particularly fashion savvy though. Aside from her hair, another noticeable trait of hers are her shoes: she constantly wears heeled boots, stilettos, pumps, or sandals - basically any kind of footwear that gives her at least four inches of height.

History:
Tia was born and raised in El, specifically Fienal, to a large family of fishermen. Despite being an only child, she lived with a number of relatives and their children in a communal home; as such, life was pretty eventful for Tia ever since she was old enough to walk. Growing up near the water meant that nearly everyone knew how to swim and had an affinity for water (along with going out to the ocean at the crack of dawn to haul in the traps for fish), though her abilities she inherited from her parents were most likely the sole reason. Being that most of her family were water manipulators, the subject of mana was common and Tia was encouraged to embrace her abilities.

As it turns out, the Arlyn family was one of two guardians indentured to another, their duty being to serve and protect the heir. This worked well with Jori's family philosophy: while they specialized in absolute defense, Tia's family valued elimination of any threats towards the heir before they could make themselves known; in a sense, taking out the problem before it becomes one. They took pride in their services and with each new heir, a guardian was chosen from each family to protect. Rivalry was common between the two families, and it seems to have passed down to the descendants as well.

When she turned ten, Tia was next in line for the position of guardian and began diligently honing her powers and training in various forms of martial arts in preparation for her future responsibilities. She was trained in various styles of martial arts that were compatible with hydrokinesis, and while she was small, she used it to her advantage and relied on her speed and abilities rather than a specific weapon. As she had much to learn, she didn't get out very often and was homeschooled. But with a big family, it's difficult to feel lonely, and Tia spent what free time she had helping her parents with their fishing business. Still, being the smallest meant that her prowess in protecting the heir often came into question, and many of her family (especially the older members) were doubtful that she would be the right candidate. Because of this, Tia was determined to prove her worth and threw herself wholeheartedly into her training.

Eventually, this required Tia to leave Fienal when she turned twenty, following Magnhild and Jori to Estrasia. Rivalry between her and Jori's family were rampant, and it was no different for the two of them: wherever Mag went, Jori went, which obviously meant Tia would not be far behind. It was also a good chance to explore more of the world outside of Fienal and even then, her great respect for Mag and friendly competition with Jori was something she had come to cherish. From there, she signed up for the Swim Coach position, having no desire and patience to stay holed up in a classroom and lecturing about marine life. This gave her more freedom and more opportunities (and excuses) to hang out at the pool.

Personality:
Tia is a complicated person made up of contradictions. First thing to note is that she is relatively difficult to get along with: though she doesn't try to seek conflict, it's not hard to irritate her and she's almost always displeased by something. She's snarky, blunt, and caustic with people (mostly the latter if she doesn't like you), yet is generally softer with people she trusts and is comfortable with. Thankfully, it's relatively easy to get on that list... with enough patience. The thing is, Tia speaks her mind and has a sort of tough bitch/no-nonsense attitude that everyone is subjected to until she changes her mind about them. It's both a good and bad thing in that she's efficient and hard-working, but it also comes with a rather big competitive streak along with aggressiveness and stubbornness. This is reflected in her family's philosophy and fighting styles: most of her training was focused on attacking and eliminating and less on defending.

Tia is a veritable tsunami and is usually a force to be reckoned with when she gets angry, yet maelstroms do end up calming in the end. Although she's competitive, Tia does have the capacity to work well in a team, yet her short fuse sometimes can land her in trouble often. Her coaching style mostly involves yelling at her team with no small amount of swearing and general verbal abuse. She doesn't have the time nor patience for those who can't keep up or come off as slow, which is probably the main reason why she gets into arguments with Jori most of the time. However, it's her drive to do well and accomplish her goals in whatever she needs to do that gives her verbal abuse an edge of support - she has the ability to bring out the best in herself and others if they need it, just don't expect it too often. Tia doesn't have many goals aside from fulfilling her duty to Mag and making men out of Estrasia's swim team.

On the same vein, Tia is also fiercely loyal; being indentured to Mag means laying her life down for her at the drop of a hat and Tia is prepared to make the sacrifice. This also extends to Jori and her family, people that have impacted her life and are thus extremely important. Though she is not someone who frequently demonstrates affection, it's easy to pick out hints that she really does care more than she lets on. Perhaps it was the way she was brought up, as training to become a bodyguard at the age of ten means shaking off childhood tendencies and maturing rather early. It's not that she's unwilling to form friendships or interacting with people, but it's more of the fact that she's used to competing and usually places her duty first before anything else.

However, this also makes whatever relationships she does have extremely important. It's safe to say that she would go to great lengths to protect that bond. She has a soft spot for kindhearted individuals and especially for children, perhaps stemming from the large family she grew up with. Basically, get past that hard outer shell and you'll be stuck with her for life, whether you like it or not.

♜ SAMPLES
Third Person Sample:
It was sunset by the time the last net was pulled in, fish tumbling onto the large tarp stretched out on the shore. Tia watched as they flapped and jerked, fins and scales sparkling red and gold and violet in the fading light as the others took up their buckets to start the separation process. Grabbing her own bucket, she dipped the lip in the sea and began filling it with water.

It was her last day at home and while she was never much of a sentimental creature, Tia had a feeling she wouldn't be able to spend her days at the ocean again. Life ebbed and swelled with the tide, much of her childhood was a constant oscillation between training and the need to prove herself - there was little time for her to reflect during the days. Her family believed in hard work and diligence, which she had grown to value and adopt; yet it was one evenings like these that she wished she could stay behind and stand at the water's edge, letting the sea caress her gently around her ankles. Her respect for Magnhild was absolute, of this she had no doubt, and despite her feelings she knows she would sacrifice her life for her without any hesitation. It was because of this that she ultimately decided that leaving was the decision she had to make, no matter how much she'd end up missing Fienal in the end. It was her very first choice she had made in terms of her future, she had to make it count.

As they hauled the fish back home, she kept her eyes on the horizon, watching the waves lap against the light of the sun as it slipped slowly beneath. No matter what it would take, she would uphold her family's honor and fulfill her duty as a guardian.

First Person Sample:
I'm only going to be sending this out once, so you either copy this shit down or remember it. For those of you who are new and are interested in joining the swim team, I'll be your coach and unless you're prepared to be worked to the bone, don't bother joining. For returning members, we'll be working with a new training schedule so you better hope you've been swimming regularly during the break.

As you all should know, this is an extra-curricular sport, so obviously your studies will come first. If you know you won't have time to commit, don't waste your time or mine by signing up if you're not going to show up for practice regularly. We'll have a break during midterms and finals, so I shouldn't be getting any complaints on you idiots failing any of your classes. If I hear anything from your teachers about your grades dropping, you can bet your sorry ass I'll be taking you off the team.
