Night-vision goggles?? That has got to be a bizarre experience, you seriously can't see anything? How do you get to your table? What do they serve? I hope its not something grotesque that tastes marvelous, though that would be somewhat hilarious.
yup, night-vision goggles. Its total sense-deprivation. You are led to your table by the waiters. They serve cantonese food, which means that I ordered the vegetarian set menu as I didn't really want to be guessing which bit of animal I was eating.... guessing at the vegetables was hard enough!
I read the book (by Suskind, no?) way back when it went through a reawakening in the early/mid 90s. I thought that the premise and plot weren't awful, but that the text itself was slow (excrutiating at times) and dull. Perhaps this is due to the translation?
Either way, I'd sit through Alan Rickman reciting pi, so I'll probably see this if the chance arises.
thanks for writing this. when i first saw the preview for this movie, it instantly grabbed my attention and became the top of my to see list, i'll have to go see it and come back and discuss it with you. i am into those arthouse flicks, something that's visually stunning with a twisted plot and leaves you wandering about the darkness of mankind. i love those. maybe i'm a weird dark person myself. the whale restaurant sounds very neat too. i miss beijing in a huge way! one of these days i'll be back to visit and maybe we'll meet up?

ok, I'll skip the book. as for Alan Rickman, his part is too small (we both know that we need *more*) but yeah...
