I am busy writing a personal statement for teacher training and was about to write:

I ALWAYS WANT TO DO THIS!

Sometimes I wish I could have an interview for a job I didn't want (or, you know, need), and try just saying all the daft things I think. Like,
Interviewer: "Can you tell us why you think you'd be good at this good?"
Me: "Because I'm brilliant. At everything. I'm probably better than you, in fact."

The phrase "academic arena" just makes me think of representatives of different schools of thought facing off in gladiatorial knife fights to the death, watched by cheering undergraduates.
