oh my god. I've had the /exact same thoughts/ ever since I was old enough to think about this kind of stuff. Even your family sounds exactly like mine, haha. (As for birthdays, I tend to forget mine completely.....and my last birthday party was when I was 8).
Dude birthdays to me are just like any other day, I don't care about it at all. I may feel obliged to go out to dinner with friends or something but it's not even on my birthday that we do that. while people get upset over not receiving gifts or "having the worst birthday ever", it's understandable but unnecessary.
i feel like an old lady who ruins all the fun ahahaha but really, i do enjoy using these days as an excuse to have fun and put off important things i should be doing.
I'm only really sincere about giving presents if I genuinely care about the person, and I like trying to think of stuff that'll make them happy. It works the other way too...my friend remembered that I once mentioned that I wanted some of her bead art for Christmas (I was actually joking), but she did do it for me. :D Times like that are nice....but on the whole, I see Christmas as a holiday that has become way too commercialized. :| Since my family has never really celebrated it (and all of my relatives are in Taiwan), I've never experienced "the Christmas spirit" either.
My brother is the one who always remembers my birthday for me, haha. "GUESS WHAT DAY IT IS TODAY?!" (My birthday during the summer and I tend to lose track of dates once school lets out...so my response is usually, "What?") haha, I feel like such a cynic (and now that I think about it, I was a cynic from a really young age. I wonder what happened. D:)
O yeah same here. My parents are annoyed at that, they think it's a waste of time to spend so much money or time to prepare a present for someone because that person will not be as good to me and will one day not be my friend anymore so there's no need to bother. Well I want to make friends based on friendship, not for my own advantage which is what they do, but they don't understand the concept of friendship. It makes me sad that they implement this rule on me. My family is in China also, so we just celebrate with friends which isn't as real as the family Christmas spirit.
Ahaha my brother does that too, he takes so much responsibilities in remembering important dates and he's only 7! He's so cute. I've been a cynic for a long time but have never realized it until now. I think we're born with it (or maybe it's Maybelline).
