On a scale of asshole to normal person, if a person in the job position you'd be most eligible for informs the team that he's leaving at the end of the year, how wrong of it is to immediately wonder if you could have his job?

If this person leaves voluntarily, I don't see how that would make you an asshole, at all.

That's pretty much just life. People around here don't even wait for someone to leave before they start angling for jobs.
