On a scale of asshole to normal person, if a person in the job position you'd be most eligible for informs the team that he's leaving at the end of the year, how wrong of it is to immediately wonder if you could have his job?
Totally and completely normal. In fact once when I was leaving, I informed a friend of mine right after the boss so she would know to apply for my old job. She ended up being the one to get it. I don't remember if I've ever done it the other way around successfully, but I know I would totally jump to apply if it was me.
