Since reading the article I've changed my driving habits. I'll let myself glide to a stop for longer periods. And am more careful with my acceleration.
My fuel economy has slowly increased since I bought my current car 3 years ago, and I suspect that it is in part due to being more conscious of how I can drive more smoothly and efficiently (especially being a manual).
I have a display that gives current fuel-economy per second, and sometimes use it to try different things, like coasting at higher-revs in a lower gear compared with lower-revs in a higher gear, or in neutral.
Of course, sometimes it's fun to plant your foot too. :)
my calais had an instantaneous fuel consumption reading as part of the trip computer and i used to alternate between trying to get awesome fuel economy out of a 5.8 litre V8 and get bored and thrash it to watch the readout say 99 litres/100 mwahahahahaha
see, my car wouldn't possibly be able to show 99 litres/100k.. it's only a 1.3 litre engine! so I'll have to push it the other way. or that's the plan, anyway....
my civic used to get better fuel economy when i thrashed it as hard as i could than the best the calais could get on the highway hahahahahaha so there was not so much chance of getting an records in the calais
and that civic had a CRX motor with twin webers on it...
