Writing fic the other day, it occurred to me that Sephiroth calls Cloud by his first name while all ~Jenova'd~ but would've used "Strife" (or Private Strife, Cadet Strife, whatever) when sane. Like, during his puppet mindfuckery it'd be a perversion of the intimacy that comes with using a personal name, but while he's actually capable of human ( Read more... )

It's one of those things that you write because it's IC but don't necessarily think on the implications. Something like that. And now I feel silly for missing it.

A result of them sharing so much Jenova material, perhaps. When Cloud and Sephiroth meet IG, crazy!Seph doesn't think of Cloud as a separate person so much as an extension of himself--which is, as you said, a much more intimate relationship than soldier and commander.

Of course, it could just be an excuse to have Seph say "Cloud" in that lovely, lovely voice... *sigh*

He totally would. The Sephiroth depicted in Crisis Core is... very professional. But, uh, I don't remember, does he uses Zack's surname? And if he doesn't, is that because Zack is, well, Zack, or because Zack is a SOLDIER?

I honestly don't remember what he called Zack. I played Crisis Core once, when it first came out, and then never again, and I prefer to quietly pretend that the rest of the Compilation never happened. /unpopular opinion

I'd have to find a script or something to get an actual answer.

I am actually beginning to doubt if he ever called Zack by name... (and are there any other pieces of the compilation when we see him talking with Zack?)

I feel so proud because I've actually noticed that everyone automatically does that.

But really, that's Sephiroth's entire character right there, isn't it? He's distant, formal -- I saw the comment about Zack, and probably the only reason he calls him by his first name is because, well, Zack. Other than that, he first-names Angeal and Genesis, but they've been (depending on what canon, I guess) basically brothers for years and years. And so, when he's all Jenova'd, well, he kinda thinks Cloud's his brother in a screwy way.

It would actually probably be a rather poignant turning point in their fanfic'd friendship if Sephiroth ever did deliberately call Cloud by his first name. I love it.

My reaction would be split between THAT'S AWESOME AND I FEEL SO SPOILED AAAAAAAH and dear lord that's over 150k words why would you do that to yourself. :D I doubt I'm going to bother changing anything in what's been posted because I can't wait to move on from this story already, so if you're still interested I'd be honored to have you podfic it. (Just send me a link when you're done so I can post it everywhere?)

Why would I do that to myself? 'Cause it's awesome and my favorite story in the entire frickin' fandom and I like the sound of my own voice, that's why. Definitely still interested -- I'm about half done the prologue and first two chapters right now, and I think I'm probably going to be able to do about a chapter a week. So yeah, expect a link in, like, six months or something. XP (I might post it periodically on my LJ page, but I have no idea how to do that so I probably won't. Woo!)
